Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Patrick K — 17 Sep 2014
Christian Bale's iconic childhood role and it was brilliant as he plays a spoilt British kid Jamie living with his parents in China during WWII. During the Japanese invasion, Jamie is separated from his parents.
With the help of soldier-of-fortune Basie (John Malkovich) Bale learns to survive without a retinue of servants at his beck and call. By the time Basie and Jamie are tossed into a Japanese prison camp the boy has picked up enough street smarts and developed enough intestinal fortitude to regard his imprisonment as an exciting adventure.
Its very Spielberg in terms of how the story is told and the length of the film but its helped by a very mature performance from Bale who carried the movie with help from John Malkovich.
