Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Brian T — 30 Oct 2014
A spellbinding performance by Bale holds Spielberg's World War 2 fairy tale together. Some people have noted that the story itself is muddled or thin. I don't find it to be that at all. I'd liken it's narrative more to something like Alice in Wonderland.
It's really the journey itself that is compelling. There are plenty of off-hand morality minuets throughout to give you deeper meaning. Spielberg has chosen to adapt Ballard's true life account in a way that's very true to life.
No Hollywood happy ending. No real retribution. Just a slice of world war through the eyes of a boy that lived through it.
