Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Alejandro R — 24 Jan 2015
Epic! The budget certainly allowed for that in this grand production. Had no idea Christian Bale started so young and he was just brilliant as a child actor. I also had no idea I was watching a Spielberg film and I can see it a bit now, but it's not really that typical of Spielberg.
It is a film I think very much worth watching, but doesn't seem to have gotten as much attention as it deserves. I was Bale's age at the time he made the film. The typical Spielberg popishness does detract sometimes, but the film is nevertheless a note-worthy spectacle of the triumphant youthful spirit.
Great cast, but the film doesn't really express their talents so much, as it is very much told through young Jim's (Bale) eyes, and the telling is full of energy, which is something Spielberg can do well.
