Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Daisy M — 19 May 2010
Empire of the Sun was based on the real life of James Graham. Directed by Steven Spielberg, this movie showed how WWII affected China and Japan.Jamie Graham was a spoiled boy, played by young Christian Bale, from rich parents, living a great life,in a big house with comfort and many servants.
Aware that the war was close,Jamie lived his life as usual, and loved playing with his airplanes. Until one day, where the diplomatic relations of Japan with USA was not valid anymore and the city of Shanghai was occupied by Japanese Army.
He was separated from his parents, and moved to a detention camp where he spent the rest of WWII as part of his childhood and adolescence. The War completely changed Jamie, from that spoiled kid to someone who knows how to survive in all circumstances.
Visually the movie was spectacular to look at. The cinematography was great and there were some well directed and good looking sequences in the movie.
