Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Mesh B — 09 Feb 2013
I always had a hate and love relationship with Mr Spielberg. On one side, I can't deny his amazing storytelling direction, but on the other, he is a one lucky fella with good scripts handed to him. With heavy history backdrop, cross-culture theme and World War II storyline, Empire of the Sun script has already contains all of the winning formulas. The two and half hour movie started out slow, boring even, but then let itself gain to the surface with nail-biting scenes and overwhelming drama. The young Christian Bale is undeniably talented, although cringe-worthy at some point, but he sure does beat Haley Joel Osmont in this one. And what a very-moving ending scene as well!
8.2/10.
