Sebelum Bruce Wayne, sebelum Dicky Ecklund. Bale sudah menunjukkan bakatnya yang luar biasa di film ini. Penampilan yang membuat National Board of Review menciptakan kategori Best Juvenile Performance khusus untuk Bale.
Selain untuk award Best Juvenile Performance, film ini memenangkan penghargaan Best Film dan Best Director untuk Spielberg, namun sayang hanya mendapatkan 6 nominasi Oscar dan tidak dinominasikan untuk Best Director ataupun Best Picture.
Empire of the Sun merupakan titik awal yang sangat baik dari Spielberg dalam 'mencintai' tema Perang Dunia II, yang lalu diikuti oleh Schindler's List, Saving Private Ryan, mini-seri Band of Brothers dan The Pacific.
