Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Jake. K — 17 Oct 2008

Empire of the Sun is one of the few, if not the only, coming of age films or coming of age any other media for that matter, that I have ever enjoyed and if there are any others never this much. It suceeds where most films of the same genre fail, it maintains my interest for the whole 2 and a half hours, its main character is likeable, and it has more of a message than just loss of innocence, although, that is a big part of it.

If nothing else the amazing performences of a young Christian Bale, and a younger John Malkovich make it a must see. In my opion its a travesty that Malkovich wasn't even nominated for his potrayal of Basie, an amazing character that appears to be an allegory for the worlds opion of America.
