Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Sam B — 11 Mar 2012
I had never seen this film prior to now (2012), largely because it was reputed to be one of Spielberg's weaker efforts. I discovered that sometimes the conventional wisdom is wrong. This is a powerful, brilliantly acted, directed, and produced epic.
A young Christian Bale is stunning as the boy who struggles to survive WWII in China under Japanese occupation. The cinematography, dialogue, music, and editing are all superb. Those who dismissed this film decades ago owe it to themselves to give it another chance.
