Review of Empire of the Sun (1987) by Bill C — 07 May 2013
Steven Spielberg adds the finest ingredients to a dreamlike Tom Stoppard adapted screenplay and trusts it all to work. A twelve year old Christian Bale, John Malkovich at his finest, production designer Norman Reynolds and the Shanghai International Settlement all insure that it does.
Stoppard's "stadium of antiques", conceived in counterpoint to the Langhua Civilian Assembly Centre bears surreal testament to the power of the survival instinct - and of this film. A sewing needle has become more valuable than a 1938 Packard Super Eight Touring Sedan or a Ming vase.
