Marking the loss of innocence, this hauntingly heartbreaking drama by Steven Spielberg is a visionary ode to the harsh reality during World War II. As the spoiled young boy is separated from his parents and captured by the Japanese soldiers, he embarks on a tragic and sudden journey into adolescence.

By spending years in a prison camp, and through a difficult relationship with a much older, emotionless man, he is able to learn how serious and unjust a life can sometimes be. Spielberg storytelling technique is on a very high level, making the movie very engaging.

Young Christian Bale is splendid in his role, and John Malkovich is similarly convincing. With its beautiful Japanese imagery, though harrowing during camp scenes, Empire of the Sun shows a realistic take on the hell, which was World War II.
