Review of Emperor Jones (1933) by Isaac K — 21 Jan 2010
Oh my god this is a good movie. I'll admit that I never read the play that this is based on, but It was a great movie. A black man is arrested, and sent to jail. He escapes by hiding in a truckload of rocks.
He gets a job shoveling coal on a steamliner, and leaves the boat to swim ashore. on shore he uses his cunning, and intimidating stature to become the so-called "Emperor" The best scenes come at the end when he's lost in the jungle.
He delivers a great monologue, and is eventually shot and killed by his rebellious citizens. Robeson delivers a great performance as the power mad Jones. See this film.
