Review of Elysium (2013) by Berni E — 23 Mar 2014
It looks nice, but there are too many plot holes and the politics doesn't make sense because it's too big. District 9's did because it was small scale. When you take on the whole Earth (and Elysium) you need a bit more nuance.
Matt Damon does his best with a shoddy script, Foster is wasted and Sharlto Copley is entertaining, but it isn't enough. Also, too much violence for the sake of it which undermines the serious message.
I hate films with simplistic liberalism in them like this because it gives shitty conservatives carte blanche to point out how dumb 'lefties' are. Too many eye-roll moments, and now I know why people said this film isn't great.
In conclusion, it's just too Hollywood.
