Review of Elysium (2013) by Lewis E — 25 Mar 2014
A cinematic sci-fi action flick with amazing visuals, sound effects and action sequences. Slightly underrated I reckon amid comparisons with Neil Blomkamp's first film, 'District 9'. Almost rivals 'Gravity' of it's depictions of space scenery.
I feel it could have been an epic with a more in-depth study of the main character (Matt Damon) and his love interest (Alice Braga). The majority of the flashback scenes are in Spanish and I did not have the luxury of subtitles.
Whether there was suppose to be, I haven't found out yet but this did hinder my empathy with these character's past. Also could have emphasized the backdrop surrounding the social and political divide of earth and Eylsium to a clearer degree.
With regards to this aspect, 'District 9' was superior. However, 'Eylsium' is a treat for the visual and audio senses, successfully achieving quality popcorn entertainment without overly dumbing down the storyline.
Defo deserves the HD treatment.
