Whilst inevitably undesirable, humanity's ongoing pollution and environmental damage has procured a popular film concept. Alongside District 9, The Island and even Wall-e, Elysium depicts a similar scenario whereby humans have been forced to develop another way to live. Only the rich and famous however are eligible to reside on the pollution free, luxurious space center known as Elysium. Whilst this unfair divide may seem like the main premise of the film, it actually simply revolves around Max's journey to survive. Having failed to make sure a radiation door would close properly, Max is infected with deadly radiation. I was disappointed that this was the ultimate storyline, as not much else was explored. The ultimate conclusion does inevitably encompass more than this, however it seems to come about as a lucky coincidence, instead of being the primary objective. A key component of the film is left relatively undeveloped; that of Max's relationship with the female interest. Whether this is due to Damon's lackluster acting, I didn't particularly believe that there was any real connection between the two.

However great visuals appear throughout; particularly the space scenes, and the action sequences are slickly executed. However I did find it a bit odd how Max became super strong and capable towards the end of the film, whereas he was often out of breath and on the floor for the rest of the film! Nevertheless this is a capable action flick, ideal for a Saturday night.
