Review of Elysium (2013) by Alex A — 23 May 2014
With His debut District 9, director Neil Blomkamp not only proved to be a talented director with solid artistic sensibilities, but also a director who probably had a bright future behind him. That talent and vision he demonstrated in District 9 is almost non existent in Elysium.
The story is generic, bland and preachy and the directorial style is as formulaic as it gets. The massive drop in quality between Elysium and District 9 would have you believe that both movies were made by completely different directors.
Whether Blomkamp will be able to bounce back from this movie and get back on track, or settle for being a generic Hollywood director with a one hit wonder under his belt is unknown to me.
