Review of Elysium (2013) by Phillip D — 14 Dec 2014
Once again, Blomkamp starts with a really excellent premise and ends on a rather unfulfilled note. Elysium has less of what turned District 9 into a crap shoot, namely the stupidly determined South African themes, which still persist, but with significantly more muting.
Unfortunately, Blomkamp loses much of the gritty originality that made his last film work in the first place. Elysium ends up being much more broad and entertaining, but at the sake of its intellectual core.
Kudos to Blomkamp for trying, but the man can't seem to buckle things down enough to blow us all out of our seats.
