I just recently saw this film and I was surprised this film was made in 1960 and still maintains its relevance today. Burt Lancaster is Elmer Gantry, discovering the world of modern-day religion only to make a buck, like the other snake oil salesmen of religion today.
Shirley Jones is amazing as Lulu Baines, the " five-dollar" hooker who had a history with Elmer and who brings Gantry down to human level. Jones was the first whore to win an Oscar in 1960, followed by Elizabeth Taylor for BUtterfield 8 the same year and then Jane Fonda for Klute.
A Must-See.
