Review of Elle (2016) by Sol O — 30 Jul 2016
This film is blatantly misogyny. Yes Isabelle Huppert's performance is extraordinary but she's playing a woman who wants to be raped. On top of that ALL the female characters in this film are monsters of some kind.
Her mother and her need to physically abuse herself with plastic surgery, her neighbor and her escape into religion and acceptance of monstrous behavior, her husband's new girlfriend is an opportunist, and her Daughter-in-law is quite simply hideous.
When Michele says no to her lover she doesn't want sex anymore...she apparently means yes. Even the violent rape in a video game is repeated to remind us the victim might enjoy it. I am amazed that none of the critics see any of these things as problematic simply because without question Verhoeven is a skilled filmmaker.
..a mysogynist but a skilled one.
