Review of Elle (2016) by Robby K — 06 Jan 2017
If you were to craft the perfect movie for the talented, but slightly demented Paul Verhoeven to direct, this would probably be what you come up with. A film about dealing with things above all else, it's carried by a career topping performance by Isabelle Huppert who adds so many layers to her character that just when you think you have her figured out she springs something new on you.
Americans who are just getting into foreign film's probably shouldn't start with one just because it is so different from what we typically see in the states. Verhoeven has always liked to take chances with his movies and those that he takes with this film all add to the experience that this movie provides.
The main issue I have with this movie though, oddly, is that I felt unfulfilled after watching it. I still can't figure out what it is, but I left it simply feeling that although it's a great watch, something is missing.
