Review of Elle (2016) by James R — 02 Feb 2017
This is one of those films that deals with some very...personal and disgusting things. It's not going to be for everyone. It deals with the particular subject of rape, sexual desires and what people crave.
It's pretty intense, but its actually really well done. The film is about a lady named Michele Leblanc (Isabelle Huppert) who is viciously assaulted and raped by a masked man. Her guard goes immediately up.
She has a very dark past involving her father, so she doesn't report the crime. Meanwhile she starts receiving text messages and emails from the assailant. Michele is a powerful woman who's the head of a video game company.
she has many enemies and throughout the film we learn more and more about her past. The film while dealing with some pretty serious shit is really well acted and Huppert shows a strength in her casualness.
This is a mystery film at its core, but even deeper than that it's even more about what draws people to certain people. Michele is no angel. The more and more we learn about her the story unfolds and presents two sides to everything.
I enjoyed this one a lot. it has hints of a very dark dark comedy and has a really strange story surrounding it all. Definitely, give it a look if any of this strikes some kind of interest in ya. It won't be for everyone (its French by the way so its subtitled), but for those who can handle the intensiveness of it it really is worth a watch.
