Review of Elle (2016) by Nico S — 27 Feb 2017
This movie is a very slow burn that takes its time to reveal little bits and pieces of its characters one scene at a time, which is befitting for the film seeing is that this is a character study above all.
The character of Michelle is a very deeply scarred and complex character who is portrayed masterfully by Isabelle Huppert. With such a complex character to portray, Huppert was somehow able to convey her emotions very subtly while trying to be relatable.
That's where my problem with the film comes in, sometimes Michelle's character is too ambiguous and confusing with the decisions she makes, and it makes it hard for audiences to get around to it.
But all in all it's the film's subtlety and complexity that drives the audiences intrigue and keeps them locked in till the end to see what happens, and it all pays off, and not in a way one would expect.
