Review of Elle (2016) by Marcovelous — 08 Mar 2017

I have difficulty getting into this one (fooled by the metascore 89). There's no cleverness that I can observe. Michelle is just twisted, stupid and crazy in this film. She wants sex and she does not want to lose it until she does not want it. That's why she's stupid enough not to call the police when she's raped for two times even though she has the chance to fight back for the first time and she has known his identity for the second time. Worse, she continues to let him into her life, taking care of her car-crash injury (ok, she's again stupid not to call the police or call ambulance). What's more, she invites him to rape her in the basement, lol. She takes a long time to acknowledge this unhealthy relationship and is of half willing to let him rape her again until her son stops it. I don't really care about how she treats her parents and friends and exes poorly because that does not add any flavor to the distasteful rape-or-consent story. Almost all the characters besides Michelle are forgettable and no character development. Side-plot becomes just boring.

This film also is a lackluster because of its lack of details and surprising twist(s). Like, the identity of who rape Michelle is predictable, lol. And for this film to be out in a 2016 context, it just does not work out. Put it to early 2000s, it may work. Maybe that's why I almost hate every psychological thriller (maybe except Gone Girl, at least that was trying to smart).

I'm not offended by violence. I'm not offended by cougar sexuality. But I'm really offended by its stupidity. I mean if you're looking for a revenge, please call the police. You're just an ordinary person and please let the law do its job to deliver what he deserves. Ugh! It's NOT GOOD.
