Review of Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) by Matt E — 29 Dec 2008
The follow-up to the original 90's film Elizabeth, which made Cate Blanchett a star and garnered her an Oscar nod. This one is not as good, but still has potential. The place where it fails the most is the music.
The score drowns it and makes it seem like an over-dramatic soap opera. It undermines the great acting to the point where it is not so great. Blanchett is again phenominal in the role of the Virgin Queen, as is Geoffrey Rush.
Clive Owen is decent but a bit out of place. The story revolves around the continuing conflict between England and France, and really doesn't matter. Just watch the fire-cracker Blanchett and you'll get all you can out of this movie.
