Review of Elizabeth: The Golden Age (2007) by Joseph H — 10 Apr 2012
Not sure why the sequel was panned as it has so much in common with the original film that was so lauded. Blanchett is just as unbelievable as before, if even more vulnerable. Clive Owen is definitely better than the hammy Fiennes, all piratey and smoldering.
Elizabeth is pining to be a real person, but is forced to lead a nation in a time of holy war. The costumes, sets, and cinematography are beautiful once again. The stakes are high, and the war scenes are gorgeous, with the exception of a few bad green screens.
Fine movie making, old fashioned, and sumptuous.
