Was a real pleasure to watch this for so many reasons.Basically carries on where the first film left off, complications arise with the whole catholicism Vs protestant religion subject and neighbouring spain. Its ruler King Philip deeming that England is in need of salvation.

As with its predecessor I was impressed with the wonderful costumes and locations that are conveyed in The Golden Age. This film seems alot brighter and vibrant too whereas before in the first film, it was a darker more sordid affair. To a certain degree the movie seems to be polished and furbished, very hollywood and glamourous.

The material is mostly historically accurate, but some key areas perhaps could of had more focus. Like the shooter and the miraculous miss. Also the battle war-speech by Elizabeth in full armour plus horse seemed relatively awe inspiring. Was hoping for a battle on land but the Spanish Armada never even reached our shores. I loved how symbolic it is when King Philip is left in darkness as his candle blows out and Queen Elizabeth is lit up by the imminent storm.

All the cast was fantastic in this and the level of acting was very high. Clive Owen was very charismatic and manly as Sir Walter Raleigh, found some of the Scenes with him and Cate Blanchett very emotional.

Even when there executing Mary Stuart (Samantha Morton) and Elizabeth is powerless to intervene that was very heart breaking.

Geoffrey Rush as usual was superb as the Queen's trusted advisor Walsingham.

The whole film is done to epic proportions but I can't help feeling that Elizabeth was trapped. Trapped in loneliness only able to watch others, to love from afar, and bound to her country. To honour, to the state, selfless and merciful yet wise and firm. Cate Blanchett has once again done a perfect performance as the best Queen this country has ever had.

Worth seeing for its historical implications, also has a fair bit of intelligent, humour and wit. Definately timeless in every sense.
