Review of Elite Squad: The Enemy Within (2010) by Zak S — 19 Jul 2012
It's pretty good at the start, then it slows down a bit, then towards the end it picks up again, but it never really feels like that great of a movie to me, which is weird because usually this type of thing really does it for me.
I did like it, just not as much as I expected given its critical acclaim. I think a lot of that had to do with the excessive voice over. Sure, it was necessary at times. It helped at the beginning since I didn't see the first one, but as the movie progressed, it started to feel like they could have done away with the VO in favor of something that would have been more expressive.
VO can be great (see Memento), but this felt like a cheat, and that's just too bad. Action was just ok and kind of made me wish I was watching The Raid and City of God (both excellent films in a similar genre).
Acting was decent. Didn't connect with the main character too much. [3/5 STARS] [072012].
