Review of Elite Squad (2007) by Kunal M — 23 Jun 2008
Gritty, ultra-violent and more than a little disconcerting, Elite Squad depicts the same expansive slums of Rio so vividly portrayed in City of God, but this time from the point of view of its corrupt, bureaucratic police force.
Some might argue that the film excuses, even glorifies, the use of excessive police brutality to maintain peace in a lawless society. Such polemics are irrelevant to the film, as its agenda is quite simply to give us a glimpse into the horrors that exist just beyond our manicured lawns and picket fences.
