Review of Elite Squad (2007) by Paul B — 12 Dec 2008
"City of God" showed us Rio's murderous favelas from the perspective of those trapped inside; this gripping companion piece tells much the same story from the point of view of the elite BOPE commandos forced to adopt a particularly brutal form of street justice just to stay alive.
Placing the blame squarely on the drug users who enable armies of thugs to maintain their power over the slums, BOPE's violence must be met with violence ethos is portrayed as the only reasonable response to an environment in which no one on either side of the law can be trusted.
The result is stark, adrenalized cinema that takes no prisoners.
