Review of Elite Squad (2007) by Luis A — 14 Dec 2008
As a Brazilian I can assure that really like this movie much more than "City of God", "Bus 174" or another fake-o-mentary like "Isle of Flowers".
As you (the avarage american public) don´t know is that most of filmmakers in Brazil are like Oliver Stone.
They even lie to show their point. It is exactly what happened with "City of Gold", "The Motocycle Diaries" or even a documentary like "Isle of Flowers" od Bus 174.
Bus 174 was the previous work of director Padilha (it must be spelled like "padeeleea") and he showed to Brazilian people what he thinks: the criminal drug addicted that take hostages at an urban bus was a kind of "hero". The real criminals are us - "the society".
In "Elite Squad" he tried to go further, showing the corruption in police ranks.
But the results were the opposite.
He portrayed a real story. Not a faked one.
People that went to the movies approved the police "elite squad" methods and, mainly, the causes of the "violence".
There are a bunch of "intellectuals", "community leaders" and others that speak for "peace" but act otherwise. They are the real hypocrites.
And, of course, the consumers of illegal drugs that cause mobster wars that develop into mass killings.
It´s all in the movie.
It´s gruesome sometimes.
But it is not a "city of god" clone. That was just fantasy of a leftist artist. This is for real.
