Review of Elite Squad (2007) by Garry T — 01 Jan 2012
Strong, documentary-style film about Rio de Janeiro's favelas (slums) and the elite police force used to fight against it. The film also covers police corruption, the contrast between the rich and the poor's perspectives (particularly regarding the brutality of the police) and B.O.P.E., the elite force specifically assigned to infiltrate Rio's slums and crack down on the drug and gun trade.
Some might not like the documentary feel, but it's important to draw the picture for those who aren't familiar with how the system works in Rio. This method works effectively by educating the viewer. While this happens, the main story is also being told side-by-side, or, using the main topic to aide it.
The film has a fast pace which doesn't let up. It's debatable that whenever there is violence, it could be regarded as "sickening" or "senseless." The fact is, Rio's slums are depicted this way because, according to director Josà (C) Padilha, they ARE that way. If one wants to be buttered up about the favelas' reality, don't watch this film. It's that simple.
