Review of Elite Squad (2007) by Steve W — 17 Mar 2012
A fantastic movie that deals with facism and crime in t he heart of Rio de Janeiro. The pope is going to stay in the slums, and BOPE (State Police Special Operations Battalion) must go in there and secure the place. The plot runs much deeper, exploring guilt and corruption.
The movie starts with a bit of action, then leaves it off with a cliffhanger. It takes its time to develop two cop characters, the hot-headed Neto, and the over-thinking Matias. This is the part of the movie that is the slowest, as they spend the first half of the movie doing mundane things.
Everything picks up in terms of plot and story when Neto and Matias join BOPE. They have to undergo a vicious training regiment and then get involved in some dirty dealings with some bad people.
The film morally divides you, part of you is horrified of the things BOPE is depicted of doing to criminals, while the other half is cheering because these guys are no-nonsense ass kickers that do not compromise.
A very interesting film, but a bit slow at the beginning and the vague ending leave a lot to be desired. An intense and gritty look at the system.
