Josà (C) Padilha's entry into the world of police action-drama is a welcome one. Wagner Moura stars as an honest police office, a rarity on the Rio force, tasked to lead the "Elite Squad." With the Pope heading for Brazil and wanting to visit the impoverished slums, the Squad must clean them of gang violence and drug trafficking.
All the while wife is pregnant, and he's desperate to find a replacement so he can exit the dangerous line of work. In "Elite Squad," Padilha combines a classic cop-movie feel with contemporary grit.
