Review of Elf (2003) by Paesito P — 11 Dec 2017
A fish-out-of-water film from the start into a redemption story near the end, Elf is a surprising watch for someone who waited about 14 years to see it. The film honestly is just my type of humor, I like the witty banter, some of the zingy comebacks, and the general idea of a man child working his way through New York posing as an actual elf from the North Pole.
I generally enjoyed most aspects of this film and laughed many times. Will Ferrell is Will Ferrell at some of his best in this film and I really enjoyed that. Some aspects that did falls short for me were the romance aspect of the movie between Will Ferrell's character and Zooey Deschanel's character as I just didn't quite feel like there was chemistry there it was as if Zooey's character just fell in love with a complete child which sort of creeped me out.
Another aspect that I didn't find was the movie's strongest aspect was the redemption arc of the father. It just felt rushed near the end and I didn't feel like Will Ferrell's character was actually a cause for change.
Either way though, the movie is worth a watch for the first half alone and the second half, though it has problems, still has some good laughs and moments.
