Review of Elevator to the Gallows (1958) by Robert D — 06 Feb 2008
So you might not know a thing about French New Wave, but you realize it's Criterion so it's got to be good. This is a quiet thriller, the ideas and scenes fit tightly on a few pages, your interest is to admire the photography especially Jeanne Moreau's cigarette smoking despondent walk through the night.
This is where Miles Davis discovered modal jazz, and for those sorts of fans you need to see it to find out how he did it.
