Review of Elevator to the Gallows (1958) by Mathieu C — 08 Jun 2007
The film opens with a tight closeup of Jeanna Moreau telling the man who is about to murder her husband how much she loves him. This is all we get, but at the same time really all we need. We know what happened before, she must have met him through her husband's work, they started an affair and then eventually came to the realiszation that they must eliminate the husband in order to go on.
The focus of the film is all the events that happen due to the fact that after the husband was murdered, the man is unable to meet up with her and run away. The film achieves its greatness in the fact that it portrays to perfectly the idea of waiting and being left in the dark.
The film also has a subplot revolving around a young delinquent and his florist girlfriend stealing a car and spending a night in a hotel. This subplot is interesting and ties into the larger picture in an extremely interesting way.
