Typical french new wave noir is the best way to characterize this. louis malle directs a great little film that is told very much in the vein of godards breathless only with a few other elements thrown in.
a planned murder goes wrong when the perpetrator gets himself stuck in an elevator spawning almost all the events that follow. there are 2 characters that resemble the main characters from breathless only they come off as stupid and perhaps intentionally so.
you think you have it all figured out and then it all comes crashing down.
