Review of Elephant (2015) by Julia F — 02 Jan 2011
A good criticism of a cast of high school students as they go through an ordinary day at their school, culminating into a brutally realistic school shooting by two friends. The long and uninterrupted tracking shots of the students make it feel like the movie viewer is an invisible outsider watching everything unfold. There's no plot, no villain that has to be stopped to save the day... it's simplistic in the barest terms.
Unfortunately, if you're not a fan of tracking shots, the movie can seem slow moving despite the total run time of 81 minutes. Some of the scenes (like Elias taking John's picture in the hallway) are repeated more then once from multiple angles, and some of the acting is a little choppy, but overall, excellent film on a controversial topic.
