Review of Elephant (2003) by Nathan F — 20 Sep 2008
Not for the impatient; essentially 65 minutes of exposition, then a brief (somewhat anti-) climax. The routinization is perfectly ominous and the framing is Van Sant as Van Gogh; but occasionally feels like he's just killing time.
The quietness is appealing though; since the dialogue seems pretty attached to genre conventions, something which Van Sant usually avoids at all costs. A film worth seeing, but not worth revering.
