Review of Elephant (2003) by Zak S — 23 Nov 2009
I think its so disturbing because of the painfully slow buildup. its almost as if its told in real time, as we learn about these students, each different, each following a different path. im not a huge fan of the zero resolution, as well as the lack of concern most students and staff show to the situation - is gus van sant trying to make a point about our media-based insensitivities to violence? I dont know.
there is a really talented cast at work here, and from what I read, most of them were non-actors. that's very amazing. obviously based off the columbine shootings, the lack of a conclusion leaves very little insight on how these crises begin, and how to prevent them in the future.
its almost as though they are a force of nature, unstoppable, unrelenting, like a storm... maybe they are...
