Review of Elephant (2003) by Murdoch M — 28 Oct 2010
After the commercial success of Good Will Hunting, it was refreshing to see Gus Van Sant return to his art-house roots and make something as understated and minimalist as this. Despite being based around the Columbine shootings, the film has a quiet quality that is completely realistic and leaves a great deal open to interpretation for the audience.
Combined with Last Days and Gerry, Sant has proven that he's an artist who explores cinema in a refreshingly subtle way. Elephant captures a pain and separation that is unique and smart.
