Review of Elephant (2003) by Andres B — 24 Sep 2011
This film is jarring and very sad. It is also extremely important and just about as baffling as the events it's based upon. Honestly, it's hard for me to call it amazing, or to even review it as a film, because to me it is much more a reminder the most horrible of events that inexplicably happens over and over again, particularly in the US, and tears up the lives of so many people and families. I wish this approach was taken on other films dealing with important subjects like this.
The film provides no explanations or reasons for any of the events. It doesn't emphasize on any heroes, though I'm sure there were a few. It merely watches as these innocent lives are taken, therefore putting our position as an audience, spectators, into perspective.
People have complained about this film's lack of back story or resolution, but it is precisely this type of sensibility that makes this the best anti-violence film I have ever seen.
