Review of Elephant (1993) by Chip H — 20 Sep 2008
I mulled this one over all day, trying to decide if I liked it. In the end, I think it was done the right way. By carefully avoiding all the cinematic tricks of the trade that might unintentionally glorify or glamorize this Columbine-like incident (no musical score, no climactic moments, no household-name actors, no "shaky cam" footage), director Gus Van Zant has actually succeeded in making a antiviolent statement despite the movie's violence.
If a film has to be made about Columbine, this is the best way to do it.
