Review of Elephant (1993) by Bob H — 23 Dec 2009
The RT consensus for this film is that its "spare and unconventional style will divide viewers." Personally, I enjoyed the movie's stream-of-conscious style narrative, it seemed to fit it quite well... things can change in an instant.
The way that the subject matter was handled seemed appropriate... sickening and terrifying, but not over the top. The script and handling of it makes the characters and plot seem more plausible.
But what ultimately broke the movie for me were the amateurish, painful performances. The actors really made the film lose a lot of its plausibility. Typically, when you're witness to a shooting, you don't try to remember what the script you were given said.
And when I noticed how poor the performances are, everything else crumbled. The direction felt amateurish, the script seemed poor... ugh. I'm passing them for the effort. You'll likely forgive it for its fault.
