Review of Elektra Luxx (2011) by Emily O — 22 Mar 2011
Like its predecessor, Women in Trouble, the acting is uncomfortable (for the actors and audience alike) and the sloppy efforts toward wit or irony are more noticeable than any humorous or clever effect.
The puppets are cute, but the strings are distracting. I like Carla Gugino in this. However, her portrayal of her own twin is unconvincing. Much like Gordon-Levitt's sudden Latin-American accent (?) halfway through the film, Gugino's "twin" has a similarly inconsistent lisp.
Kudos to Adrienne Palicki, who is the only actor that carries any comedic or character consistency, in both films. Timothy Olyphant annoys me to no end. The resolution to a rather rocky plot (which doesn't make any sense unless you have seen the first film) occurs in a Deus ex Machina type fashion, and wouldn't you know, the love interest (Olyphant) conveniently pops up at the end.
The film confuses itself and does so without purpose. It's like tying all of your shoelaces together just for the hell of it.
