Review of Electronic Labyrinth: THX 1138 4EB (1967) by Sean G — 24 Jun 2011
This futuristic mindfuck that George Luas produced in the years leading up to Star Wars paved the way for the modern cinematic special effects we see today. It also helped lauch the career one of Hollywood's most talented and enduring actors in Robert Duval.
When producing Star Wars, Lucas borrowed heavily from THX's Orwellian landscape he had been fiddling with since his film school days. The film, though simple and low budget, not to mention downright depressing, helped usher in a new era in Hollywood.
No longer would sci-fi and fantasy films employ cheap looking and absurdly unbelievable special effects. The vox populi had grown increasingly weary of all the cheap "stop motion" sci-fi flms generated over the previous 15 years.
The "Big Brother" feel and stainless steel futuristic surrealness of THX give it a unique style all its own that hasnt been duplicated since. Not bad for a movie that most people outside true-blue cinema fans, have ever heard of before.
