Review of Election (2005) by Richard A — 21 Apr 2008
Funny, satirical comedy romp which speaks volumes about everyday life and what really goes on in the seedy underbelly of life at Carver High before, during and after a student election.
Great menacing characters, Reese Witherspoon is always an unwanted overpowering presense is most films but in Election her presense is so over the top it works wonderfully! Witherspoon as Tracy Flick is pure cinema gold, a role she was born to play. We get nice guy jock Chris Klein, a good guy at heart but overly naive and generally stupid, everyone went to school with a guy like him, it works so well. Matthew Brodrick has a meaty role as a likeable but ran down school teacher caught in his drab life from day to day with no hopes except for some little beam of excitment to shine on his existance, excitment that may crush him at the same time.
Plenty of vulgar, shocking moments, deceptive double crosses, balls out comedy and brilliant writing make Election a well rounded comedy better than most. Not really my taste this movie surprised me and kept me watching until the credits rolled.
