Review of Election (1999) by Gareth R — 16 Apr 2008
This deeply odd film concerns the increasingly ruined life of Mr McAllister, everybody's favourite schoolteacher, played with perfectly-suited niceness by Matthew Broderick. It's all in the name of stopping Tracy Flick - a shockingly good Reese Witherspoon - from ruining other people's lives by winning the Student President election, but many of the things he does (such as cheating on his wife) are just down to him.
The characters are all perfectly pitched, particularly Tracy's impossibly nice opponent (Chris Klein), and it's frequently intelligent and hilarious. Witherspoon is dark but somehow truly sympathetic, much like the film, which might be remorselessly mean but is somehow strangely watchable.
