Review of Election (1999) by David B — 25 Jan 2009
This is one funny (& sharp) movie. It may also be the best film ever made about politics. Big statement, I know. Actually, I'm surprised that it was released a decade ago, because it still speaks so much about the times in which we live.
High school is often considered a microcosm for the "real world." Never more so here. Alexander Payne's assured take on a high school election is hysterical. "Election" also boasts some wonderfully inspired performances.
Reese Witherspoon is brilliant. Tracy Flick ("Pick Flick") could easily been a caricature. Instead Witherspoon grounds her with a soul - and never misses a comic beat. Matthew Broderick is also great in a less showy role.
This is a modern classic.
