Review of Election (1999) by John S — 03 Apr 2012
Alexander Payne is a fabulous director - I admire everything he's done from About Schmidt to the Descendants. This is is first film and Im ashamed to admit I had never seen it before.
Its a cracker. Full of Payne's very dry humour and insight into everyday life and the challenges it throws us. Oh and as some other people say its a metaphor for the US politics. But I dont buy that,.
This is not a teen comedy by the way. Its not in my opinion anyway. I just think its a comedy/drama that happens to have teens in it.
The film centres on Tracy Flick and her high school election campaign, and the deeds of Jim McAllister who gets in her way and gets squashed. His life ends up as shit while she ends up fucking a senator.
Theres a moral in here somewhere....
My favourite scene was when a bee stings Brodericks eyelid - how unlucky is that. Poor fucker ends up looking like a twat for half the film. All his fault for getting in Flicks way you see!
