Review of Election (1999) by Alex M — 12 Aug 2012
It was Alexander Payne and Jim Taylor's witty screenplay that wowed critics and audiences upon Election's initial release and it still hits just as hard today. This is a darkly entertaining high school comedy powered by the combined talents of Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick.
As you might expect, Witherspoon does her overly-confident girl-next-door routine but is somehow better than ever playing the disturbingly determined Tracy Flick, who will happily cheat her way to her goals.
It remains one of her best performances, and actually one of her finest films. Granted there's a slight issue regarding the film's lack of likeable characters, but sometimes it doesn't matter when the characters' despicableness is as well-written is it is here.
A neat little comedy.
